I could see an image through the rolling but could not get to the preferences to adjust the "Monitors". I tried turning the 12" off, but the 17" was still acting like the secondary monitor. Did you just turn off the 12" or did you completely disconnect it? Did you reboot with both monitors attached or just the 17"? I had similar symptoms with a 7300/200 when I tried to hot-swap monitors once. I turned off the 15" Apple monitor and plugged in a NEC 15" which was automatically recognized and worked perfectly. I then plugged in the 15" Apple again and it gave me the rolling screen. I had to reboot with the NEC connected, change the resolution to 600x400, shut down, reconnect the Apple monitor, and then reboot again to get the Apple 15" monitor to be recognized. Then, I could reset the resolution to my old preference and continue my work. Hope this short story can give some help.
