[G4] Where to put a 3rd hard drive?

It is possible. But it's not a good idea to have a hard disk share the 
channel with an ATAPI device. The ATAPI command structure is more 
complex, the DVD-ROM drive is significantly slower, so, due to the 
nature of the ATA bus, your new hard disk's performance would likely be 
sub-optimal.

The best solution is either to add a new ATA controller card, or to use 
the new drive externally, in a FW enclosure.

Yes, of course. If you can't use either of the two optimal solutions, 
and your new drive will share the channel with the ATAPI device, at 
least make sure the latter is set to slave, and the hard disk to 
master.
