I wouldn't be surprised if some developers offer Universal Binary copies of their current applications to all of their base of owners for a nominal handling and shipping fee like $9.95 once intel processor Macs begin shipping in January 2006 (my guess). I have a feeling we'll see the Universal Binary logo (Yin-Yang, black white, PPC-Intel) on the boxes of new software before the end of this year. Most of the popular code out there now will be able to be ported to include Intel processor Macs in a matter of a few weeks worst case. Really the most painless major transition in the history of the company. Brilliant obsolete free scenario. No reason to postpone purchases because of processor versions. I think the most significant slide-point was the one about power or instructions per watt in future mid 2006 PPC and Intel processors. 15 for PPC vs 70 for Intel. "That told us what we have to do," said Steve. Yeah, I can see that is the whole ball game right there. Smart move I think. k On Jun 6, 2005, at 7:59 PM, Tim Collier wrote: > Go WATCH the keynote address and then come back and talk. > > Tim > On Jun 6, 2005, at 10:13 PM, Matthew Wensley wrote: > > >> Thoughts on software support as we move to a new processor? >> >> Personally, I can't see buying new "iron" between now and '07. >> Making a purchase now, then having to buy all new software in a >> couple of years does not make a lot of sense to me >> >> Just how long will developers produce software for the current iron?
