Also check the pins on the monitor cable to be sure there are none broken. I had a similar situation happen to me and, upon close examination, discovered that one of the pins had broken off and was still lodged in the PC's VGA port. So every time I moved the monitor back to the PC, it worked fine; try it on the Mac... no go. It was very confusing until I found that broken pin!
