[G4] Downloading PDFs

I have Safari 1.2.4 with Panther. Upon download with Safari, PDFs
usually open automatically in Preview, and the .pdf file remains on the
Desktop.

Is this the same as with Safari 1.3?

With Tiger's Safari, are we talking about something different? Will
the .pdf file disappear upon closing the window as used to happen all
too often with Internet Explorer?

Thanks,

Al Poulin
