However your friend's problem is more than likely the DSL modem. If the service provider can do a remote loop-back test, your friend should request that service. If they can not do a remote loop-back then they should request a replacement modem. Does you friend have anything else connected to the ethernet port on their platform, if so perhaps it needs to be disconnected. If there isn't anything else connected, do they have something that can be connected. Or perhaps the modem provided by the DSL service provider is not of the correct ethernet speed and it doesn't have the lower speed interface, or perhaps is can not adjust to the correct internet speed. Some modems also have the ability to determine if the interface is DTE or DCE and will adjust itself to the correct interface.
