Hardware: 400 MHz Sawtooth. 704 MB RAM. Two internal HD's and one
Firewire drive.
System: OSX 10.3.9

I'm looking for some suggestions of what to try next. I'd like to avoid
reinstalling the OS if possible.

After moving we finally got our DSL account set up. Not having
braodband I've put off updates. And since I again have a hi speed link,
I updated some software as suggested by Software Update.
Latest iTues, Quicktime, Java Security, and 3 Mac security updates.
2005-06, -07, -08.

All seemed well except at the end, I got a message that I'd have to
download and reinstall the Security Update 2005-07. All others seemed
good to go.

When it restarted, start proceeded normally until it was just about to
give me my desktop picture, when still with the blue background, The
progress bar essentially stopped while the text under it read "Login
Window Starting." And there it hung. Nothing I've tried has done any
good. Fortunately I have a backup of my system on my Firewire drive so
I'm not completely S.O.L.

There's a crashlog called loginwindow.crash.log but I don't know enough
to understand what it's trying to tell me. Here the beginning of it.
