Or try iText Express.  Also free and very easy to use but not exactly minimalist.  It will open MS Word docs and is essentially an significant expansion on Text Edit.  Reminds me a bit of using WriteNow, which was my favorite simple word processor 12 to 15 years ago.  If anyone knows of problems with iText Express, I would appreciate a note as I probably will replace Text Wrangler with it.
