So when you put the Panther DVD into the DVD drive it doesn't show up on the desktop? Does the drive do anything - flashing access light, whirling noises, etc.? Do you know anyone that has a working DVD drive that you can test the DVD in so as to be sure that it's actually readable? Basically just about any CD or DVD drive should work under OS X with read-only discs. And most burners should work in Tiger without installing Patchburn.
