I remember hearing that the power buttons on these machines are prone to failure, producing exactly the symptoms you describe. Sounds like a job for a VOM/continuity tester. You might try to hotwire around the switch, or to find/ repair a flaky connection/wiring, but these are pretty sophisticated switches and a mistake or miswiring could zap something catastrophically. Have you checked the power supply? I don't know of an alternate startup sequence.
