That is correct I have had system disc that are machine specific. I do not know if it is written anywhere. I have tried installs and gotten the message that says this software is not intended for this system. Not a direct quote I do not remember the exact wording. That said, sometimes it works. In this case since he is looking to install OS 9 and not OS X it may work.
