[G4] problems w/ device control -video deck

does anyone out there use a panasonic mini dv deck with os 9? i can't get mine to work in device control mode, nor will it play into my machine manually. I know that my mac "sees' the deck because it freezes until i turn the deck off or unplug the firewire. any ideas?
