Thank you all for responding. I'll try zapping it when I can get over 
there.  Hmmm... we had already switched out the controller card, 
thinking that would do the trick, no dice. It was a Rage 128 pro, maybe 
that's not enough?

When double clicked, the desktop icon opens up an empty window. In
Disk Utility, it tells the name of the disk, the size, everything as if 
it were physically there, which it isn't.

The system was installed clean from disks, then updated by the System 
software updater.

iLife problem: We'll install a different optical drive for her- the 
iLife was a DVD and her drive must be CD only. Thank you all. :-)
