Using dogpile.com search the internet for the application called 
"Proteus" it has a lot of great features in the "Free" version.

Or both of you could get "Skype" which will let you do messaging for 
free or talk PC-to-PC for free. Skype also has very low PC-to-Landline 
rates. However I believe that you need something faster than "Dial-Up" 
to use Skype, but then again I might be wrong.
