Tried simply entering text and saving as new file. Again--same result. Suggestions appreciated. Suggestion 1: Make it clear just what the application is. Do you mean Apple's TextEdit? Or is it some third party editor? Version number for the app? Suggestion 2: What version of OS X is installed. Suggestion 3: Describe the origin of file xyz. How big is it? Does it display properly when first opened and before changes? Is it formatted in RTF (Apple's Textedit standard) of is it just text? Suggestion 4: Tell us what happens with other files. That new file failure sounds serious. Is there anything strange about your keyboard or mouse? Suggestion 5: Try a cat command on the file in Terminal.app. Well, naah, that's probably too much to ask. Suggestion 6: Try saving to a different disk or a network file. Can you make a Finder copy of the file? BareBones software offers TextWrangler as a free version of its BBEdit text editor. It doesn't muck with RTF the way TextEdit does. -- --> If it's not on fire it's a software problem. <--
