My favorite is ATM which was the Apollo telescope mount in the early 
70's. Since then it has been asynchronous transfer mode which is the 
modulation technique used between your DSL modem and the telephone 
company. But there is also an automated teller machine which I 
haven't figured out how to use yet.

Oh. And did I say DSL?  Sorry.  ALL acronyms should be spelled out in 
full the first time they are used in a document. That's digital 
subscriber link.
