I don't know who CDT might be but I owe him a big Thank You for posting this 
fix which eliminated a problem my G4 MDD has had since last year. On one of 
the hard drives, the colors were becoming more washed out as time passed which 
also disabled the monitor preference color settings. And yet on HD#2, 
everything was entirely normal, eliminating questions about the hardware.

And previously, doing an archive and install had done nothing to fix the 
problem.
