Harry, thanks for your help. Unfortunately your idea with the Option Key did not work. What I got was a lock closed on the left,what looks like a very narrow white space where text could be entered, and then an arrow to the right pointing to the right. The arrow was active I could click on it but it did nothing. In fact the computer locked up. I had to pull the plug because I could not shut down.
