If the hard drive is bad, it will not go into target disk mode. there need to be a valid hard drive however when you boot up it should show the icon(folder with a question mark) that tell you it is looking for the system folder. If it does not find one you should get a different icon thats denotes no valid system disk was found (broken folder) I think? might be different these days Since you are notare not not getting to that point at all. I suspect a serious hardware issue. Either mother board or processor related.
