I don't think any of the older PPC Macs can boot from a USB connected
drive, and the same may apply to some early Intel Macs, too.

FYI, the FW & USB build your own enclousures are becoming rare, and
even more rare are off the shelf external drives with FW connections.
Tis a sign of the times I guess.
