When you turn on your G4 and the computer ask you to connect to a network. Is the name of your network shown? The Wi-Fi shown on the toolbar of the G4 won't show as active unless it is actually associated with an Access Point (solid black bars). If Wi-Fi is on but you are not connected to an Access Point then the bars are shown as Grayed out. If Wi-Fi is off on your G4, then no bars are shown at all. Only a hollow cone is seen.
