When ordering items from the USA to import to the UK it is best if you can keep the total cost including postage and packing below £18. That way you avoid being charged VAT (at 20%) on your import and you also avoid the flat rate (£8) charge from Royal Mail (for collecting the VAT from you and giving it to Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs). To find out how many $ you can spend check the exchange rate HMRC are using for the current month on their web site at http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/exrate/ This information should help with working out what the actual cost of an import to the UK is likely to be.
