It seems to me, the OP's point was, he wanted his stated combination to 
work together. Going to OS 11.6.6 is not quite the answer to his dilemma.

As I recall 11.6.6 requires you use it with a computer that has an Intel 
chip aboard. The G4 doesn't/won't work well with OS 11.x.

As my experience parallels yours, with Word 2004 working on an iMac with 
OS 10.5.8, the OP probably has other problems.
He should come up with a more detailed description of what sort of 
problems he's seeing with Word 2004.
