Nick, I think I may have chosen problematic drive enclosures. They are plastic and I suspect the drives overheated. For info. one drive was a Hitachi/IBM and the other a Maxtor. It's tough to lose 400GB. Also, all of my equipment is power controlled through a large APC UPS device.
