[G5] Spotlight problem

I just updated my new G5 Dual Core to 10.4.6.

Spotlight now does not work.

When I enter text, even for something that I'm certain is on the  
machine (iTunes, Mail, etc) there's a little spinning gizmo that goes  
on like the Energizer bunny and no results are shown.

Any suggestions?
