[G5] No Mic no mas

I can't get a microphone to work with my G5 Power Mac.

A stereo mic which is proved to work with my PC does not produce any 
measurable input. It is a standard stereo mini-plug device that does 
work with other audio devices. A momentary jump is seen in the sound 
input level when first plugged in, or removed, but it does not pick up 
voice or other environmental sounds.

The mic is turned on and input level is set at max.
