The Duophone box does do some magic. It contains some components to reduce phone line voltage, noise and hum. A phone line is a "balanced line" meaning neither line is a direct ground. It also has 48 Volts DC on it and 300 volt AC during ringing. These voltages will surely destroy the iMic. Your idea might ground one side of the phone line and that will make noise and hum on the phone line. Also, it might have a low resistance and the phone company will think your phone is off the hook constantly. The duophone box should contain some magic components called capacitors and transformer to overcome all of those problems.
