Home Networking & LaserWriter Select 360

Randy,

I have exactly the same printer set-up, and my test page looks the same
as you describe (by the way, localtalk is the port and AppleTalk is the
language/protocol used over that port or other selected ports...kind of
confusing terminology). There is one poorly documented feature/problem
with the Asante AppleTalk Bridge (and possibly other bridges) with
AppleTalk printers: the printer only broadcasts its name/settings/etc.
info to an ACTIVE network, and the bridge only accepts those settings
from a broadcasting printer (not quite Catch-22, but close). The trick
is to power-on your printer first (after connecting the bridge to the
printer and to the computer; then as soon as the printer is warmed-up
(and test page printed, if set to do so), THEN power-on the Asante
AppleTalk Bridge (the printer will broadcast for a few seconds or so
(maybe 20-30), so you need to be quick). This should work (at least it
works for me). One caveat: for every power outage, this procedure
must be repeated...kind of a bummer if you forget, so you might want to
put a note on the front of your printer...at least that is what I've
done.

I hope that this helps, and if you have any other questions, please let
me know.

p.s. Of course, this all assumes that you've set your computer to use
AppleTalk over your ethernet port.

p.p.s. In Mac OS X, the Apple Printer Utility (formerly Apple
LaserWriter Utility) will work in Classic, thus you can still adjust
the settings for your LaserWriter Select 360 from within Mac OS X.
