printer/modem port engaged

I came across this problem once before under system 9.1. I was trying 
to set up an old stylewriter to the modem/printer port of a G3 laptop.
At first I checked for fax software but no joy. Eventually I posted the 
problem on a newsgroup and solved it. That was a long time ago. Now i 
have given the G3 to my son who has just headed off to uni but can't 
set up the printer because the same problem has arisen. Any idea what I 
need to do?
