I seem to recall that It needs to run from the hard drive; you can copy 
the fix from the CD to your desktop, and run it from there. Follow the 
instructions in the readme file included with the firmware update.

I don't fully understand your question;  if you mean can you try to 
apply the patch to a booted system, sure. If it's already been applied, 
the firmware updater will give you a message that the system doesn't 
require the upgrade and stop.

No, but the next time someone accidentally sticks an OS X based 
software disc in your system, it won't suffer from the "boat anchor" 
syndrome. ;-)
