The best way to minimize loss of data is, (a) regular maintenance, and (b) regular backups. Also, it helps if you use a good e-mail client. One reason to prefer Mail.app over the Microsoft alternatives (Entourage, Outlook) is that Mail stores messages in mbox files (standard Unix format, which may be read by any text editor). Microsoft's proprietary formats are much more difficult to manipulate if something goes wrong. f
