Sudden Quits-Appleworks and MS Word

Using OSX 10.2

Recently installed MS Office for OSX.  Appleworks 6 of course already
installed.  I've had the new iMac about one month.

Both Appleworks and MS Word suddently quit while I'm pasting clip art or
text, inserting links . .   I've just started using these two programs and
am surprised that they quit so regularly.

Suggestions?
