You can buy an A/B switch that uses ethernet cables to go between your
modem and router or computer. Put the switch on A for access and switch
to B to break the connection. Simple and works well. <br>

No, I don't turn off the modem. It doesn't have an on/off switch, so I would
have to unplug the Ethernet cable.
