Panning Audio in FCE

Is it just me? I'm editing my first movie in FCE and all of my audio 
from my mini-DV captures has the Left and Right pans set to the center, 
making the sound Mono. Is that the default? Is there some way to a) 
capture sound in the future and default to normal Left/Right stereo and 
b) globally fix all these clips I've captured to Left/Right stereo? As 
it is, I'm having to individually select each audio clip and set them 
by hand.
