I do like the Camcorder idea - it is the most flexible. If your Mac has a Firewire port your set otherwise you'll have to get a card and you may want to consider saving up and getting a newer Mac since it would be fairly old at this point if it has no FW port. Do check that it does pass through not all do and there Sony models which will play your old Hi8 tapes (again verify this feature before you buy - not all do). Having that feature will let you sell your old Camcorder, even if you got $100 for it you could put that towards the new camera. iMic from Griffen http://www.griffintechnology.com/ will plug into your USB port and do stereo in - no video but for $35 it will do your LP's. Onkyo also has a similar product.
