The problem, at least in FCP, was the subframe checkbox in the title area.
With that unchecked, my friend's titles imported and rendered perfectly.
Not sure what, if anything, can be done about this anti-aliasing snafu in
iMovie. He tells me there are problems on many discussion boards about
iMovie difficulties with text rendering.
