varous newbie questions

You may be able to find Final Cut Pro 1 or 2 pretty cheap.  Was a kick ass
program from the get go.  And you'll get to learn FCP so you can make a
better informed decision before investing in the newest version.  (PS- your
instincts are right about Premiere, in my opinion.)
