In general for theatrical release, DV looks terrible compared with 35mm or S16mm blowup. However, many independent movies are shooting on DV. FULL FRONTAL, TADPOLE and PERSONAL VELOCITY were three of the bigger DV-originated releases this past year. The latter was shot by Ellen Kuras, and won the Cinematography award at Sundance. Kuras has shot several DV features and uses the DV format artistically. On the other hand, the New Yorker review of TADPOLE said it looked like it was filmed through bubble wrap. If the DV look is not appropriate for your movie, consider shooting 24p HD, which can better approximate what we consider a film look. Lowell Peterson ASC
