Pass Thru Digitizing

Back when we were talking about using the "pass thru" feature on some 
camcorders to digitize video from analog sources, I wasn't paying much 
attention, because i knew mine wouldn't do that. Since then, I picked 
up a good used Sony TRV-900 and assumed it would have the pass thru 
capability.

I tried it yesterday and haven't had any luck yet. If I hook up a VCR's 
output to the camera's input, I see the video from the VCR on the 
camcorder's LCD screen. But if I plug in a Firewire cable, I can't see 
the video from the VCR on the LCD screen or in the viewer screen in 
iMovie or FCE.

Does this mean that the TRV-900 does not have pass thru, or is there 
some obscure menu setting that I haven't found yet?
