4.5 meters, maximum 16 connections, for maximum total distance of 72 
meters using repeaters.

Some places (such as Unibrain.com) will sell you a 10m length of 
firewire.  I doubt you could successfully chain 160m worth of them 
together, though.

1394a and b have the same length and chain constraints.
