If the footage is just too dark, there is NOTHING you can do to bring back
an image that was never on the tape in the first place.  You can't get
something from nothing...

But if there is an image there and it's just a little too dark, you may be
able to tweak it with a program like After Effects -- or maybe there are
some inexpensive shareware plug-ins for iMovie that can help you do this.
