The quality is variable - i.e., you can set it up the way you want,
with longer record times offsetting lower quality recordings. A 2 hr
recording is quite acceptable - to my eye it's about as good as a
regular commercial DVD. The standard settings on my unit go to about 6
hours, but I haven't tried that low a quality yet. I have several old
LD recordings which I'm transferring to DVD, and apart from a blue blip
when I turn over a double-sided disk there is no apparent degradation
of the video (actually since the LD is of lower quality than the
potential of the DVD I don't expect quality losses in going from LD to
DVD). Multiple episodes are no problem. The current prices are
comparable to those of DVD players a few years back, and I'd anticipate
a drop to a couple of hundred or less in three or four more years.

Menuing capability is minimal. Does anyone know of any way to take an
existing DVD, copy it to a hard drive, and then generate a new menu for
it before writing it to a new DVD?
