Editing from DVD

I know this is not recommended - specifically, editing from an MPEG2
file.

But, has anyone tried capturing from the analog DVD player - then
editing and outputing that material?

I don't have any intention of doing this for serious work - but I keep
getting the question from friends who want to write there analog
material to DVD for storage.  I've always told them you can't edit the
result (and be satisfied with the result).

Thoughts?  Experience?
