syncing audio with slide show

I was putting together a slide show in iMove3 and wanted to add an adio track from iTunes. This all worked fine but I was wanting to time some of the transitions to the music. Is there an easy way of finding the points in the audio where I want the video transitions to happen.
What I did was make the slide show with clips x seconds long. I then imported the audio and played the movie. When I got close to a place I wanted the transition I had to stop the movie and play it back several times moving the pointer to find when the audio changed. I would then take that time and adjust the duration of the video still and have it re-render. With the time indicator jumping several frames at a time it is difficult finding the time to make the transitions. Is there an easier way of doing this with the iapps or would I need something more powerful?
