I would suggest that you are playing at the edge to use iMovie and OS X with only 256 MB of memory. I just added memory to my 17" iMac this morning, even though I have no plans to use it for movies. I can tell you where NOT to get memory. I paid $150 for the 512 DIMM at Crucial. Other World Computing and Coast to Coast both had the same thing for under $80. I've heard that Crucial is a little more expensive, but I didn't expect it to be double that of others.
