I believe that LaCie or d2 or some other OEM produced a hack to allow 
iDVD to work with external FireWire drives (they were selling the 
Pioneer drive in an external FireWire case and bundling the hack with 
it), but the Apple lawyers got heavy with them and they had to stop 
distributing it.
