[MacDV] recording a tv programme straight into my DV camcorder

You may need to be in the "VCR" mode rather than "Camera" mode. When in 
camera mode the recorder looks for its input from the camera, not the 
external inputs. When in VCR mode, it looks for its input from the 
external ports. At least that's the way my Canons work.
