Francesc,
You might want to consider putting your own drive together. By doing so, you
will have complete control over the interface/bridge and drive mechanism
used.
You can pick up the new Pyro 1394 Drive Kit here:
<http://eshop.macsales.com/Catalog_Item.cfm?ID=3213&Item=ADSAPI800>
This case is built like a tank and is absolutely bullet proof.
Shop for the 3.5" EIDE drive of your choice here:
<http://www.googlegear.com/jsp/ThirdCategoryList.jsp?SecondCategoryCode=0110
>
<http://www.newegg.com/app/manufactory.asp?catalog=14&DEPA=1&mfrcode=0&prope
rtycode=&propertycodevalue=3333>
Installing the drive in the case should take all of 10 minutes. Do it
yourself and you'll know exactly what's in there (not to mention how it got
there). Need a bigger/faster drive down the road? Just swap it out.
If you really want to run on the edge, take a look at this remarkable
package from Granite Digital:
<http://www.granitedigital.com/catalog/pg26_firewireidehotswapdrive.htm>
<http://www.granitedigital.com/catalog/pg32_firewiresmarthotswapdrive.htm>
You can buy all the drives you want and pop them each into a $29 carrier.
Swapping them is just a matter of sliding the carrier into the case. They're
as easy to change as a zip disk.
To answer your question, the LaCie can be partitioned
(Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility) and a bootable copy of OS X can be
installed. I have done exactly that on every kind and size of external drive
you can imagine without incident.
