DVD discs

  Ok DVD folks,
I got the DVR 105 and iDVD2, made a project to test/for fun and i need 
to burn it onto a disc.
The player box says it can burn DVD-R and DVD-RW media!
iDVD seems to want DVD-R?
What is DVD+R for and who can use it? and what are the differences?
Do I HAVE to buy apple brand discs?
What do I do if my /my parents/my inlaws DVD player won't play my cool 
discs of their grandchild?
what are my options
