Apparently I'm not alone on this. There are several discussion threads on Apple Discussions of people with very sluggish performance of iMovie 3, include some with dual processor 867 MHz systems or brand new PowerBooks. Hopefully it is a setting change or minor fix that will resolve the problem. And it is 3.01 that I have. iPhoto 2 seems to be running fine.
